Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. (Chandana Deepal) Wickramaratne has been found dead at his residence in Athurugiriya.
According to initial reports, his body was discovered with a gunshot wound at his home. Authorities suspect the incident may be a case of suicide, although the exact circumstances surrounding the death are yet to be officially confirmed.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
Mr. Wickramaratne served in the Sri Lanka Police for more than 30 years. He was appointed as Acting Inspector General of Police following the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks and was officially appointed as Sri Lanka’s 35th Inspector General of Police in November 2020. He retired from the Police Department in 2023.
