Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) is highlighting Sri Lanka’s growing contribution to the international maritime industry as the global maritime community observes World Maritime Day 2026 under the theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.”
Established in 1974 and strategically located within the Port of Colombo, Colombo Dockyard has evolved from a national ship repair and engineering facility into an internationally recognised provider of shipbuilding, ship repair, heavy engineering and offshore engineering solutions.
Its strategic location along major international shipping routes, together with its technical capabilities, enables the company to serve both regional and international shipowners.
The company’s afloat repair operations also extend beyond Colombo to Galle, Hambantota and Trincomalee, strengthening its ability to provide maritime services across Sri Lanka’s key ports.
Expansion into specialised vessel construction
Colombo Dockyard entered the cable-laying vessel segment in 2017 with the construction of the KDDI Cable Infinity for Japan’s Kokusai Cable Ship Company.
The company subsequently constructed the cable-laying and repair vessel Sophie Germain for France-based Orange Marine.
Following the successful delivery of the vessel, Colombo Dockyard secured further orders from Orange Marine. The UK-based Global Marine Systems Limited also placed an order with the company for a cable-laying and repair vessel.
Moving towards greener shipbuilding
Colombo Dockyard has also expanded its involvement in sustainable shipping through the construction of environmentally friendly bulk carriers incorporating hybrid propulsion technology.
The programme for Norway-based Misje EcoBulk AS, covering 10 vessels, represents another significant milestone in the company’s international shipbuilding journey.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders becomes majority shareholder
Following the withdrawal of Onomichi Dockyard in July 2025, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited of India became the majority shareholder of Colombo Dockyard.
The development brings additional international shipbuilding expertise into the company’s future development and expansion.
Commenting on World Maritime Day, Thimira S. Godakumbura, Managing Director/CEO of Colombo Dockyard, said the focus should extend beyond Sri Lanka’s geographical advantage to the capabilities required to compete in the global maritime industry.
He highlighted the importance of translating international standards and sustainability ambitions into practical engineering solutions while strengthening local skills and technology.
According to Godakumbura, building specialised vessels, advancing greener shipbuilding and supporting international fleets could enable Sri Lanka to create greater value from its strategic position in the Indian Ocean and strengthen its role in the global maritime industry.
