UN Expresses Deep Sorrow Over Negombo Prison Tragedy

Colombo, Sri Lanka – United Nations Resident Coordinator Marc-André Franche has expressed profound sorrow following this week’s deadly violence at Negombo Prison, extending his deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UN also wished a swift recovery to those injured in the incident, which claimed at least 27 lives and left more than 100 people injured.

The UN emphasized that prison officers and inmates deserve greater protection, stressing that ensuring their safety is a fundamental responsibility of the State. It also highlighted the need for continued investment in Sri Lanka’s prison system, citing longstanding challenges such as overcrowding, outdated practices, and poor detention conditions.

Welcoming the Government’s decision to appoint an independent committee to investigate the incident, the UN said its findings should contribute to lasting improvements in prison safety and detention conditions.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka through technical cooperation aimed at strengthening prison safety, improving conditions of detention, and enhancing the well-being of correctional personnel.
