Sarnath Becomes India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site

Varanasi, India | July 27, 2026

The Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath, one of the world’s most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage destinations, has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming India’s 45th World Heritage Site.

The decision was taken during the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, currently being held in Busan, Republic of Korea. The inscription recognizes Sarnath’s Outstanding Universal Value as a site of immense historical, archaeological, religious, and cultural significance.

Birthplace of the Buddha’s Teachings

Sarnath, located approximately 10 kilometers from the holy city of Varanasi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is revered as the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya more than 2,500 years ago.

Known in Buddhist tradition as the “Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta” or “Turning of the Wheel of Dharma,” this first sermon marked the beginning of the Buddha’s public teaching and the establishment of the Buddhist Sangha (monastic community). From Sarnath, the teachings of Buddhism spread across Asia and eventually throughout the world.

Today, millions of Buddhist pilgrims from countries including Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam, Nepal, Bhutan, and Cambodia visit Sarnath each year to pay homage at this sacred site.

A Treasure of Ancient Civilizations

Sarnath preserves an extraordinary collection of archaeological remains spanning nearly 1,500 years of history. The site includes:

  • Dhamek Stupa, marking the place where Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon.
  • Ashoka Pillar, erected in the 3rd century BCE by Emperor Ashoka after embracing Buddhism.
  • Ancient monasteries and temple complexes dating from the Mauryan, Kushan, and Gupta periods.
  • The remains of the Mulagandhakuti, believed to be the Buddha’s meditation residence during his stay at Sarnath.
  • The Chaukhandi Stupa, commemorating the meeting between Buddha and his first disciples.

The famous Lion Capital of Ashoka, discovered at Sarnath, was adopted as the National Emblem of India, while the Ashoka Chakra featured at its base forms the central motif of India’s national flag.

UNESCO Recognition

UNESCO stated that Sarnath represents one of humanity’s most significant religious and cultural landscapes. The site bears exceptional testimony to the origins and development of Buddhism, one of the world’s major religions, and preserves architectural and archaeological remains illustrating centuries of spiritual and artistic achievement.

The inscription follows nearly three decades after India first placed Sarnath on UNESCO’s Tentative List in 1998, culminating in its successful nomination during the 2025–2026 World Heritage cycle.

India’s Growing World Heritage Legacy

With the addition of Sarnath, India now possesses 45 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reinforcing its position among the countries with the richest cultural heritage in the world. The recognition further strengthens India’s standing as a leading destination for cultural, archaeological, and spiritual tourism.

Global Importance for Buddhist Communities

For Buddhists worldwide, Sarnath ranks among the four holiest pilgrimage sites associated with the life of the Buddha, alongside Lumbini (birthplace), Bodh Gaya (enlightenment), and Kushinagar (Mahaparinirvana).

The UNESCO inscription is expected to boost international tourism, encourage greater conservation efforts, expand archaeological research, and promote intercultural dialogue centered on Buddhism’s enduring messages of peace, compassion, wisdom, and non-violence.

The recognition also serves as an important reminder of the shared cultural heritage connecting millions of Buddhists around the world, particularly across South and Southeast Asia, where the teachings that began at Sarnath continue to shape civilizations more than two millennia later.
