The Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka has announced the retirement of its Director General, Renuka M. Weerakone, after completing a 32-year career with the country’s premier investment promotion agency.
Weerakone, who officially retired on June 30, joined the BOI in June 1994 as an Assistant Manager (Legal). During her three decades of service, she held several senior leadership positions before being appointed Director General.
Throughout her career, she played key roles in investment promotion, project implementation, regional development, investment appraisal, project monitoring, and policy coordination. She also represented Sri Lanka at international investment forums, trade negotiations, and investment promotion missions aimed at attracting foreign direct investment.
An Attorney-at-Law, Notary Public, and Commissioner for Oaths, Weerakone holds an MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
In addition to her responsibilities at the BOI, she serves as a Board Member of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Sri Lanka. Earlier this year, she received the Women in Investment and International Trade Leadership Award at the Top50 Professional & Career Women Global Awards.
The BOI expressed its appreciation for Weerakone’s contributions to strengthening Sri Lanka’s investment promotion efforts and wished her success in her future endeavours.
